Federal budget: The forgotten seniors (Aged 65-74)

More than 28% of the population of Cortes and Quadra Islands are seniors. The Federal budget has provisions for the estimated 3.3 million Canadian seniors aged 75 years and older, but nothing for those between 65-74. Quadra Island Seniors Housing Project close to opening its doors

After almost a year of delays. the Quadra Island Seniors Housing Project is close to opening.

The 16 unit building, beside Q-Cove Plaza in Quathiaski Cove, was almost ready last Spring.

Cortes Island takes step to solve seniors housing crisis

Cortes Island senior Hanyu Wasyliwis is in no hurry to unpack the boxes after her latest move.

The 77-year-old is settling into her new digs at her leisure because, for once, she’s not going anywhere.

“I do not intend to pack up and move ever again, God willing,” she said laughing.

Wasyliw is one of the residents moving into new housing at the Cortes Island Seniors Village, which provides stable, affordable units so older residents can age in place among family and friends.
