Haida Gwaii: Former federal Green Party candidate at risk of homelessness

Last week the BC Green Party asked British Columbians to share their housing stories to learn how the province’s housing crisis is affecting them.

One of the earliest to respond to this call was Adeana Young, the Green Party’s 2021 federal candidate for Skeena-Bulkley Valley riding in northwest B.C.

Young shared her story in three sentences on the BC Green Party’s platform: “I’ve been a renter all my life. It doesn’t count for anything. I’m going to be homeless on Nov. 1.”

Rezoning meeting for Treedom on Cortes Island

The rezoning meeting for an additional three homes on the Treedom Ventures property, at 1062 Seascape Road, in Mansons Landing Landing, was held Thursday. This would bring the total number of home sites on this 82 acre property to 8, with an additional cabin. Between 25 and 30 people attended the in-person component of the meeting and an unknown number attended through the internet or by phone.

Lawyer makes case for keeping Prince George homeless camps in place

The homeless living in a so-called tent cities will have no viable place to go if the court grants an order to remove them, the lawyer representing the group says in documents filed at the courthouse.

Very few of the roughly 81 emergency shelter beds in the city are low barrier making many of Prince George’s homeless ineligible to stay in them, lawyer Darlene Kavka says in responses to an application from city hall seeking an order to authorize occupants’ removal from sites at 538 Patricia Boulevard and 231-233 George Street.

BC announces maximum rent hike for 2022

The British Columbia Ministry of Attorney General responsible for Housing has capped the maximum allowable 2022 rent increase for residential units at 1.5 per cent.
