Abram moves Quadra Links public meeting to May 18

How our local government works

Regional Director Jim Abram pushed through an early hearing date for the Quadra Island Golf Club (Quadra Links) rezoning proposal against the applicants wishes, as well as the recommendation of Strathcona Regional District (SRD) staff and the advice of six of his fellow directors.

Quadra Links wishes to rezone a portion of their property so they can develop a 30 spot RV park, but requested that the meeting be delayed until the Fall. Strathcona Regional District (SRD) staff recommended the hearing be scheduled for Wednesday, November 23, 2022. The SRD Chair and a number of Campbell River directors voiced their support, but cannot vote in rural matters.

Only rural directors can vote and most of them supported Abram. So the public hearing will be at 7 PM on May 18, 2022 at the Quadra Community Centre.

Whiskey Point application to add a 90 seat meeting room sent back to SRD Board

The public meeting for the proposed Gowland Harbour Views development was scheduled for January 18th, 2022, and the rezoning meeting for Quadra Links Golf Course was to have occurred the following day.

With less than a week to go, at the January 12th SRD Board meeting, Quadra Island Regional Director Jim Abram, said, “I have two items of business that are very timely. We need to deal with them today at this meeting because we have scheduled two public hearings in the next week.”

Postponing all public zoning meetings on Quadra Island

Rick Shellinick has been trying to subdivide his property for more than ten years and it now looks like he will not be able to have a public zoning meeting anytime in the immediate future. At their last meeting, the Strathcona Regional District Board passed a motion postponing all public zoning meetings on Quadra Island until the province removes restrictions on public gatherings.

This is a controversial project, which in its current incarnation calls for developing 51 residential lots, a campground, marina and two waterfront parks in Gowland Harbour.
