Gorge Harbour Marina provides some housing relief for Cortes Island with “liveaboards”

Bill Dougan says the Gorge Harbour Marina had 14 boats with liveaboards at the dock this winter. As one of the managers at the resort, he says lately there have been more people looking to live aboard their boat at the dock than he has space for, owing in part to Cortes Island’s current housing shortage.

New System for collecting garbage from Cortes Island government docks

Billie Fleming runs a local waste allocation facility – processing garbage and recycling. She has been collecting garbage at the docks around Cortes for over four years. 

Cortes Currents learned that there are some changes coming to the dock garbage collection service.

Ontario’s housing market has seen skyrocketing rent prices, lowering the margins of those who can afford a place to stay.

The situation is most prominent in major metropolitans, like Toronto where rent has gone up by nearly two per cent, according to a report by the the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) released on February 2022. But while such an increase has made it difficult for many low and middle-income Torontonians, the need for housing remains.
