Save Old Growth protester shatters hip during blockade

A young man who fell from a ladder after it toppled during a protest against old-growth logging on a Vancouver Island highway was undergoing surgery for a shattered hip Tuesday afternoon.

Protester Trevor Mckelvie fell about 20 feet to the pavement when the ladder he was balanced on collapsed not long after an angry motorist, held up by the blockade on the Patricia Bay Highway, broke pieces off a support structure Monday morning.

Province contributes new funding towards First Nations language and culture revitalization

In lead up to National Indigenous Peoples Day, the province is supporting First Nations language and culture revitalization through nearly $35 million in new funding towards the First Peoples’ Cultural Council (FPCC) and the First Peoples Cultural Foundation (FPCF).

BC Greens Launch Hearings on Health-Care ‘Crisis’

The BC Green Party says urgent action is needed to address the province’s “collapsing” health-care system.

And its two MLAs are  planning a series of meetings across the province this summer to hear  from health-care workers and patients on solutions.

500 kilometres of fibre optic cable laid

The Connected Coast is a joint communications project undertaken by CityWest and the Strathcona Regional District (SRD). They will bring high speed internet to 90,000 households in remote communities from Haida Gwaii to northern Vancouver Island. As of June 2, they have laid more than 500 of the 3,400 kilometres of the fibre optic cable needed by this project.

Framework developed to advance modern treaty implementation in B.C.

The Alliance of BC Modern Treaty Nations has developed a framework with the province to advance treaty implementation in British Columbia, which was announced on May 24.

It is the first of its kind within the province and renews B.C.’s commitment to effectively implement modern treaties, according to the Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation.
