BC Halts Construction of Seven Long-Term Care Facilities

British Columbia is pausing construction on seven long-term care facilities as it searches for a way to reduce building costs.

The pause was announced as B.C. released its annual budget on Tuesday. During question period on Wednesday, Health Minister Josie Osborne said construction was being stopped while the province searched for ways to build the beds for less than $1.8 million each, which is what it currently costs. 

Seven long-term care facilities in Abbotsford, Campbell River, Chilliwack, Delta, Fort St. John, Kelowna and Squamish have been put on hold indefinitely. Osborne said the projects are not cancelled.

Tla’amin choreographer brings ‘Wild Man of the Woods’ ballet home to the West Coast

When choreographer Cameron sinkʷə Fraser-Monroe was asked to create a piece for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, he knew he wanted to tell a story from his home community of Tla’amin Nation.

He chose to feature a traditional oral tale about T’əl, a sinister figure who steals children during the night. In the story, a young woman ventures into the unknown to save her sister from the mythical beast.

Fraser-Monroe’s ballet interpretation of the story — “T’əl: The Wild Man of the Woods” — is now making its West Coast debut in locations across “B.C.” from Jan. 27 to Feb. 10.

Egg prices to go up with climate disasters affecting feed supply

Egg prices are set for an uptick in the coming months owing to climate related disasters affecting production, says Daybreak Farms, northwest B.C.’s biggest egg producers.

Kieran Christison, manager of Daybreak Farms, said while the price will go up by 10 cents for a dozen eggs early next year, the price of eggs will continue to escalate owing to increased feed and packaging (egg carton) prices.

The increase follows two recent hikes of 14 cents and 7 cents. The cost of egg cartons went up 50 per cent, due to difficulty in procuring material like pulp to make these, she said.

Riding Vancouver’s Old Interurban

In 1910, Vancouver had one of North America’s most advanced electric train networks. The old interurban line ran for 114 miles,  to Chilliwack in the heart of the Fraser Valley. It also serviced the sleepy village of Steveston to the south. This technological wonder was abandoned when British Columbians turned to the automobile, in the 1950s. A 4.6 mile segment of the route through Surrey was recently brought back to life as part of living museum project. So I went riding Vancouver’s old interurban.
