Community voices on proposed TELUS tower: Call for an open dialogue

A growing number of Cortes Island residents are pushing for a more involved community consultation regarding the latest TELUS cellular tower proposal on Tla’amin Nation land.

The 63.1-meter tower is currently a stand-alone proposal with a deadline of Jan. 31 for public feedback.

City of Prince Rupert receives $800,000 payment from CityWest

CityWest grew its workforce by 33 per cent, last year, and made an $800,000 distribution payment to the City of Prince Rupert, the telecoms company announced on Jan. 25.

What CityWest will be doing on Cortes for the next 4-6 months

A CityWest construction crew will be on Cortes Island for the first four to six months of 2022, to hook individual homes for high-speed Internet.

“Now that we’ve been issued a permit from the ministry of transport (MOTI), we have a green light to proceed with the provincial government’s mandate of connecting Cortes Islanders under the ERI grant program,” said Eric Geall, Operations Manager for West Connect Infrastructure (WCI).

Next phase of fiber optics begins on Cortes this week

CKTZ News, through an LJI grant from Canada-info.ca

Installation crews will be working on Cortes Island to lay fiber optic internet cable along roads and to individual homes starting Jan. 7. Households that had applied for the free installation will be contacted two days prior to their turn.
