Vancouver Challenging Portland As North America’s #1 Biking City

Portland has long been been North America’s #1 bike-friendly city. According to the Portland Bureau of Transportation, 7.2% of “commuters go by bike.” That figure is taken from the 2014 census, which also shows the closest U.S. competitors as Minneapolis (4.6%), San Francisco (4.4%) and Seattle (3.7%). Now a new report shows Vancouver challenging Portland as North America’s #1 biking city.

Vancouver Will Have North America’s Largest Smart Bike Share

Miami based CycleHop is already operating bike share programs in more than 100 communities and universities in the United States and Canada.  New programs are currently under development in Long Beach (CA), West Hollywood (CA), Atlanta (GA), Cleveland (OH),  and Louisville (KY). However the biggest news comes  from across the border where, according to the city’s Manager of Street Activities, Scott Edwards, Vancouver will have North America’s largest smart bike share.

Vancouver’s Record-Breaking Bike to Work Week

There prize draws, free tune-ups, coffee and snacks at 48 events across Metro Vancouver. More than 6,300 people registered through HUB Cycling’s website, a 47% increase over last year. They logged over 260,000 km, enough to circle the earth 6.5 times! Those are a few of the highlights of Vancouver’s Record-Breaking Bike to Work Week (October 26-November 1).

How Vancouver Will Adopt 100% Renewable Energy

Vancouver’s Renewable City Strategy has been released. The city currently obtains 31% of its’ from clean energy sources. Though the Acting City Manager says he finds it “hard to imagine a city without fossil fuels,” he “enthusiastically supports” this plan.  How Vancouver will adopt 100% renewable energy by 2050 .

Vancouver’s Fastest Growing Transportation Sector

Though the numbers are still far from what is being reported in European cities like Copenhagen, more and more British Columbians are adopting bicycles as their principal form of transportation. According to a spokesperson from the Ministry of Transportation, 25,115 cyclists participated in Bike to Work Week in 2014. A large number of them were in one city. Cycling is Vancouver’s fastest growing transportation sector.
