McKenna Made The Wrong Call On Woodfibre LNG

Though Justin Trudeau promised to fix Canada’s broken environmental assessment process during the last election, yesterday his government gave another signal this may not happen. Catherine McKenna, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change,  announced  “that the proposed Woodfibre LNG Project, located near Squamish, British Columbia, is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.” Critics point to flaws in the analysis of impacts to herring stocks and the province’s rising emissions, suggesting McKenna Made the wrong call on Woodfibre LNG

Lelu Island Will More Than Double Canada’s LNG Emissions

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency’s (CEAA) draft report on Petrona’s proposed Lelu island terminal, at the mouth of BC’s Skeena river,  states that, ” … if the Project were to proceed, it would be amongst the largest single point sources of greenhouse gas emissions in the country.” Lelu Island will more than double Canada’s LNG emissions.

Why We Need To Look At Hamburg Wasser

This was to have been an article about the urban waste water and energy project for a new subdivision in Hamburg’s Jenfelder Au district. This as yet-to-be finished neighbourhood will use 30% less water than the surrounding area and have a completely self-sufficient energy supply. But this project is only one of the reasons why we need to look at Hamburg Wasser.

Does Ernst & Young’s LNG Report Vindicate BC?

There are credible experts who believe that, with proper regulation and enforcement, it is possible to have a trustworthy fracking industry. They also say this does not yet exist in North America. Personally, I think the industry is out of control and BC’s government is desperate to get in bed with it. Last week the government released a report from Ernst & Young (EY) which the Minister of Natural Gas Development says “British Columbians can have confidence they are benefiting from a clean, well regulated natural gas industry.” Does Ernst & Young’s LNG report vindicate BC?

British Columbia Gets a Conditional “F” in Fracking

Western Maryland sits on top one of the most controversial shale deposits in North America. There were 245 cases of water contamination in the neighbouring state of Pennsylvania and reports from West Virginia as well. Maryland’s Departments of Environment and Natural Resources have been studying fracking operations in these two states for over three years and just released a draft report (p 2 of attached) on how fracking “can be accomplished without unacceptable risks of adverse impacts to public health, safety, the environment, and natural resources.” These proposed rules are the strongest in the US and, using them as a criteria,  I decided to grade the LNG development in my province. British Columbia gets a conditional “F” in Fracking.
