Financial Impacts of COVID 19 on Cortes, Quadra & Other Electoral Areas

While only two projects have been cancelled so far, a significant number are on hold. Strathcona Regional District staff are monitoring the financial situation closely. Their preliminary report on the financial impacts of COVID 19 within the electoral areas suggests there will be a budget surplus “primarily due to staff vacancies, layoffs, and related travel and training costs.

Provincial Parks Open For Day Use

The initial parks component of the BC Government’s restart plan begins on May 14, 2020. It applies to “front- and back-country trails, beaches, picnic areas, washroom facilities and boat launches” throughout the Discovery Island Area. Provincial parks open for day use.

Prolonged Isolation Threatens Youth’s State Of Mind

Outreach workers are running errands or dropping off milkshakes, to get face time with vulnerable kids trapped at home during the pandemic. Counsellors are conducting therapy sessions in parks to better gage a youth’s state of mind while still adhering to distancing protocols. Youth workers are doing what they can to reach isolated children and teens living in the North Island region of Vancouver Island, B.C., and support their mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic.
