The City of Burnaby is trying to enforce a municipal bylaw to protect Conservation Land on Burnaby Mountain. The giant US oil company, Kinder Morgan, has begun clear cutting and drilling in preparation for boring through the Mountain to ship heavy tar sands crude oil from Alberta through Burnaby to China.

TM Pipeline: Two of BC’s Five Requirements

Editor’s note for readers outside BC, this pertains to one of the province’s two proposed pipeline projects that would bring diluted bitumen from Alberta.

The Proposed Trans Mountain Pipeline has just hit another snag. On July 4 British Columbia’s attorney filed a motion with the National Energy Board requesting more detailed information on how Kinder Morgan would respond to maritime and land-based spills. There are 70 questions, which have not been adequately addressed. They pertain to two of the five requirements that must be met before BC will support any heavy oil pipeline.

BC’s Pipelines: The Empire Strikes Back!

The Federal Government responded within 24 hours of Vancouver’s calling for a referendum on Kinder Morgan’s proposed Trans Mountain expansion project. Not by ensuring BC residents can obtain a proper hearing before the National Energy Board – Vancouver’s complaint – but by announcing stiffer regulations for oil spills. The title for this episode of the Kinder Morgan saga should be “BC’s Pipelines: The Empire Strikes Back!”

There will not be a real Kinder Morgan Pipeline Hearing

According to the City of Burnaby’s lawyer, Greg McDade,  there will not be a real hearing on Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain Pipeline project.  Despite the many public statements by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Premier Christy Clark and Kinder Morgan, people opposing  the project will not get an opportunity to properly present their case or to cross examine Kinder Morgan. They will submit written statements to the National Energy Board, with no assurance the panel will even read them.

McDade says that Burnaby has preparing for a public hearing since December, when Kinder Morgan filed it 55,000 page application.
