Old Schoolhouse Art Gallery open to 2023 proposals from local artists

The Old Schoolhouse Art Gallery on Cortes is now open for proposals for the 2023 season. The Old Schoolhouse Art Gallery hosts local Cortes Island artists in a series of shows each year and are encouraging new artists to apply. No prior experience presenting your work in necessary to propose a show.

Newcomer to Vancouver: Navigating new accent boundaries

Sometimes, when I’m feeling especially wicked, I like to play a little game called “Confuse the Canadian.”

Played during conversation, it involves me responding to a statement or question with deadpan sarcasm or a nonsensical English phrase. Almost every time someone gets a little head-scratchy, and more often than not — something which continues to surprise me — my hogwash is taken as gospel.

The Canadian way of hearing British linguistic acrobatics and taking it in a literal sense was one of the first things I noticed when I arrived in the country in August last year.

Local Ferry Advisory Committee welcomes increased ferry service this month

Jan. 18 heralds the start of tandem ferry service between Campbell River on Vancouver Island and Quadra Island: the number of sailings per week on the route will increase from 105 to up to 210 during peak hours.

A new gathering space for qathet’s Northsiders

In 2023, the Northside Community Recreation Centre could get a new lease on life. Plans are afoot to expand the centre by 6,920 square feet of multi-use space, including a half-court gym/hall, stage, and accessible washrooms. 

The centre, which serves most of Area A, would also get a commercial kitchen and serve as an emergency reception area, should disaster strike.
