Workers tackling anti-Indigenous racism: scapegoating and ‘backlash’ at Island Health

Several current and former staff at Island Health are raising concerns after what they say has been a dismantling of the Indigenous Health department’s cultural safety facilitation team.

The staff allege that during the province’s 2020 investigation into Indigenous-specific racism in the health care system detrimental changes were made to their team. This included the firing of long-time cultural safety facilitator and then-Acting South Island Manager of Indigenous Health, Yvette Ringham-Cowan.

Call for a BC Ministry of Immigration

A duo of British Columbia-based immigration advocacy groups is calling on Premier John Horgan’s government to create a dedicated ministry of immigration. More robust immigration frameworks are needed to deal with the federally mandated rise in immigration and a shrinking workforce, spokespeople from the organizations say.

SRD Board undecided about legal action against Anderson

Cortes Island Director Noba Anderson violated an agreement that one of her land partners would communicate with staff regarding the subdivision of her property on Cortes Island, according to the Strathcona Regional District (SRD).

Anderson’s lawyer, Matthew Voell, pointed out that staff made a request, which Anderson acknowledged receipt of – that is not an agreement.  He produced a long stream of emails demonstrating that staff repeatedly initiated the direct contacts with Anderson. Voell maintained that Anderson ‘communicated with Regional District staff in her personal capacity and not in her role as a director,’ used her personal email address, and ‘almost always copied her land partner Ms. Lovena Harvey.’
