Cleaning Up The BC Liberal’s education Mess

The BC Liberal government’s 14-year-long war with the BC Teacher’s Federation (BCTF) left the province’s education system in shambles. At least 267 schools closed down. Many were old and in need of repair; others had declining enrolment numbers. The equivalent of 3,500 full time teaching and support jobs were lost. One of the government’s fiercest critics was the current Minister of Education, NDP MLA Rob Fleming. The Supreme Court of Canada ruled in the BCTF’s favour in November 2016 and the task of cleaning up the BC Liberal’s education mess was left to the new NDP government.

There were fifteen of us. The fact we were directly behind our Regional Director Noba Anderson added another dimension to someone’s suggestion we would watch her back, but this Strathcona Regional District Board Meeting seemed less tense than the one a month ago. The highlight for Cortes listeners was a motion that SRD staff respond to 32 Cortes Island emails.

They paddled almost every day, sometimes more than fifty kilometres a day. The two women were at sea for three months. They started in the icy waters of Glacier Bay, Alaska, meticulously tabulating the impact of single use plastic everywhere they camped. I heard the story of Mathilde Gordon’s 2,042 kilometre kayak adventure during her recent visit to Cortes Island.

On August 29, 2017, Cortes Community Radio, CKTZ 89.5 FM signed a memorandum of understanding with the Strathcona Regional District, on Northern Vancouver Island, British Columbia, stating we are to give them temporary usage of the station during emergencies. This has been part of Cortes Radio’s vision from the beginning but up until a week ago seemed more of a goal than a reality. Everything changed on Thursday, December 6, 2018. This morning Derrick Harvey talks about CKTZ’s new emergency back-up: radio in a suitcase.
