Germany’s renewable sector is setting new records again. For the past three months, they supplied more public electricity than the coal sector. This came to a peak last month. Renewables produced 54.4% of Germanys electricity in March 2019.

If the world fulfills the pledges made at COP 21 it might be possible to keep the rise of average global temperatures to between 3.3 and 3.8 degrees above 1990 levels, but this may be unattainable. CO2 emissions reached an all-time high, with an increase of close to 3%, in 2018. Thanks to the oil sands and transportation sector, Canadians now pour more pollutants into the atmosphere (per capita) than any other nationality. The United States emissions rose 3.4% in 2018. The only good news comes from the, European Union which has already met its 2020 emissions target. Agora Energiewende has just released a report explaining how the EU can cut emissions 40% below 1990 levels by 2030.

Some vital issues undergird the impending Cortes Community Housing fund raiser, on July 14. According to David Rousseau, one of the principal organizers, “We are slowly slipping towards a community of older people who can not afford to be here. And the people who want to come here; live here; raise families and work here are slowly being squeezed out.” He points to Hornby Island as an example of what could happen. (The population average is a decade older than on Cortes and most trades come from off island.) Cortes Island Seniors Society’s purchase of a 51 acre parcel close to downtown Mansons Landing is a significant step towards addressing the Cortes Island Housing Crises.

Germany added 2.3 GW of new onshore wind capacity in the first half of 2017. Though it failed to meet the target last year, the Renewable Energy Act set annual target of installing 2.5 GW new solar capacity. Add in a warm autumn and the winter storms Xavier and Herwart, and it is easy to see how renewables supplied 44.1 per cent of Germany’s energy in October.

Around 40% of Germany’s wind turbines will soon be 15-years-old. The French, Italian, Spanish and British fleets are also aging. More than 86 GW of Europe’s wind capacity is scheduled to be decommissioned by 2030. A new report by New Energy Update describes an alternate solution, extending wind farm usage.
