There was a surprise waiting in minutes of the February 28th session. After all the spectators went home, the Strathcona Regional District Board briefly reconvened in public to make an announcement. The Cortes referenda are moving forward for consideration at the next board meeting.

The Southern Cortes Community Association presentation was next. Though we have exchanged emails, Julian Ayers and I have never met and I didn’t think to have someone point him out to me. Nor I did not tell him that the little black device on the lectern, that looks virtually identical to a remote, was actually my recorder. The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) Board received several items of correspondence relating to Cortes Island matters at the regular meeting held on February 13, 2019. The Board directed that the matters raised in this correspondence be referred to the SRD Board Chair and Chief Administrative Officer for response and that the response be advertised to the broader Cortes Island community.

At the Strathcona Regional District’s Feb 13 Board Meeting, I had an opportunity to see how the Directors function as individuals. I suspect that all of the Cortes residents observing that meeting were impressed by the professionalism and integrity that some board members exhibited and have questions about others. One of the directors that I would give high marks to occupies a key position. Michele Babchuk and I have talked over skype for a few minutes, but this is not the same as sitting down to a face to face interview. Last week I caught the ferry to Quadra Island for an in-depth interview with the Strathcona Regional District Chair.
