Summer is here, and with it the bustle of busy days, the beauty of lake days, and of course, occasional ferry lineups. This report has an update on solid waste and upcoming community consultation on solid waste diversion strategies.
April 4 was a special date for two related events at Comox United Church. The first event was a recital, in the sanctuary, by NIPR Federal Green Party candidate, Jessica Wegg. Soirée de l’Oiseau Rebelle (Evening of the Rebel Bird), featured twelve arias from the 17th to 20th Centuries. Jessica was accompanied by Comox Valley pianist, Sean Mooney, and joined by her voice instructor, Carol Anne Parkinson, in the lyrical duet, “Sous le dôme epais” by Delibes. Jessica’s powerful mezzo-soprano voice was a surprise to most of us in the audience, and showed us an accomplished artist as well as lawyer, mother, partner, environmentalist and politician.

There were already 19 names in the joint letter when Cortes Currents contacted the two women spearheading this campaign and another 6 were added before this post was finished.
“This has all happened within the last 48 hours. (Bob Chamberlain) a former Vice President of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs sent out the first call for Gunn to be removed. After that many other chiefs supported the call for him to step down,” explained Arzeena Hamir, a former Regional Director of Area B in the Comox Valley Regional District.

Air quality in Courtenay is improving while pollution caused by wood stove smoke has been steadily decreasing over the past five years, according to a recent report presented to the City of Courtenay council.

For business owners, they provider a low cost point of entry into the food market. This sometimes translates into lower prices and heftier portions for customers. Last year the city of Campbell River amended its bylaws to allow food trucks at six designated locations.
The most recent entry to this sector on Cortes is ‘Canadian, Eh!’ which offers ‘homemade’ fast foods in Squirrel Cove. There is also the Burger Barn in Mansons Landing, the Klahoose Food Truck at the Gorge Harbour Marina. In addition to provisioning some of the local stores, the Sunflower Food Truck is at the Mansons Friday Market, events like Cortes Day and the Whaletown ferry terminal.
