According to Dalyce Dogterom, the current fire protection on North Quadra Island does not include private dwellings. On February 12th, the Strathcona Regional District (SRD) mailed the 240 property owners asking if the would like this changed. Little more than a third (84) of this number responded. While 64% indicated they were satisfied with their current protection, the results of the North Quadra Island Open Burning Survey show a great deal of indifference.

More Theft During COVID

Quadra Island RCMP says four times as many thefts have been reported to police compared to this same time last year.
Cpl. Sean Bulford, Quadra Island RCMP detachment commander, said the overall numbers aren’t high but the rate of the increase is significant.
“Percentage wise, it’s a large increase in a place like this,” said Bulford on Wednesday.

In response to the COVID pandemic, on April 8, the Government of British Columbia closed all provincial parks – but most regional parks within the Strathcona Regional District (SRD) remained open. Now, as the provincial government is opening parks up throughout British Columbia, the SRD is working on its own plan to reopen remaining regional parks & facilities for public use.

While only two projects have been cancelled so far, a significant number are on hold. Strathcona Regional District staff are monitoring the financial situation closely. Their preliminary report on the financial impacts of COVID 19 within the electoral areas suggests there will be a budget surplus “primarily due to staff vacancies, layoffs, and related travel and training costs.
