Carney open to changing major environment policies so projects can ‘move forward’

Prime Minister Mark Carney worried environmentalists after he opened the door to changing federal impact assessment legislation and the oil and gas emissions cap in a recent interview.

“We will change things at the federal level that need to be changed in order for projects to move forward,” Carney told CTV News in an interview on Tuesday.

He was asked if this included Bill C-69 — the federal Impact Assessment Act — and a yet-to-be-finalized cap on oil and gas sector emissions.

“Absolutely, it could include both,” Carney responded.

Conservative platform is ‘flipping the bird’ at climate change, expert suggests

The Conservative Party’s election platform claims that repealing a slew of climate policies and resource regulations will generate billions in revenue for the federal government.

This platform is “flipping the bird to climate change,” said Ryan Katz-Rosene, an assistant professor of political science at the University of Ottawa, in a phone interview with Canada’s National Observer.

Fed’s cuts to climate research travel funds ‘mind boggling,’ May says

The federal government’s decision to stop funding travel for Canadian scientists contributing to international climate change research is “absolutely appalling,” Green Party Leader Elizabeth May said.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) relies on scientists and experts across the world (including Canada) to produce in-depth reports assessing the causes, impacts and possible solutions to climate change. This body of work guides international climate negotiations.

“The IPCC reports and the IPCC itself represents the largest peer review process in the history of science,” May, who is co-leader of the Greens with Jonathan Pedneault, said in a phone interview with Canada’s National Observer.

Green Party deputy leader Jonathan Pedneault resigns

The Green Party’s deputy leader resigned Tuesday for personal reasons, leaving 70-year-old Elizabeth May alone at the helm as party leader.

Jonathan Pedneault’s surprise resignation came more than a year and a half after he and May ran a successful campaign to be co-leaders in the Green Party’s last leadership contest. But before their shared leadership could take effect, party members had to agree to change the constitution to allow a co-leadership structure, a process that was delayed several times.
