Jessica Wegg: Why Green Voices Matter

The second in a series of candidate visits sponsored by the Cortes Island Climate Action Committee

Green Party candidate Jessica Wegg came to Gorge Hall, on Wednesday, April 16th, 2025. She won’t be the next Member of Parliament for North Island Powell River (NIPR).

“We commissioned a poll at our riding level. I think they made the phone calls March 20th to 24th, and it matched what 338Canada is saying. The Conservatives will likely win and the progressive vote will be split pretty evenly by the NDP and the Liberals. As long as the NDP and the Liberals are both running, neither party will get in,” she explained.

Vancouver Island NDP candidates aim to ‘make empathy great again’

Unity, community and resistance were the rallying cries during a Vancouver Island NDP event Thursday night that drew more than 300 supporters. 

The election rally for Gord Johns, incumbent MP for Courtenay-Alberni and North Island-Powell River candidate Tanille Johnston featured live brass music and a jubilant and defiant crowd — some sporting orange wigs or draped in multicoloured Pride flags. 

A rainbow even made an appearance following a day of torrential rain.

There are 5 candidates vying for the North Island—Powell River seat: (As pictured above) Aaron Gunn (Conservative Party), Tanille Johnston (New Democratic Party), Jennifer Lash (Liberal Party), Paul Macknight (People’s Party) and Jessica Wegg (Green Party).

BC Conservatives under fire for letter backing Aaron Gunn

Provincial and municipal politicians in the North Island-Powell River riding are joining the fray about whether embattled Conservative candidate Aaron Gunn should stay in the running for the federal seat. 

Last week, First Nations located across the riding took Gunn to task for his long collection of social media posts that argue the treatment of Indigenous people in residential schools does not amount to genocide. 

They demanded federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre remove him as a candidate, arguing Gunn has “absolutely no authority” to determine what constitutes genocide when it comes to Indigenous people’s experiences of residential schools.

The Creative Force of Green

April 4 was a special date for two related events at Comox United Church.  The first event was a recital, in the sanctuary, by NIPR Federal Green Party candidate, Jessica Wegg. Soirée de l’Oiseau Rebelle (Evening of the Rebel Bird), featured twelve arias from the 17th to 20th Centuries. Jessica was accompanied by Comox Valley pianist, Sean Mooney, and joined by her voice instructor, Carol Anne Parkinson, in the lyrical duet, “Sous le dôme epais” by Delibes.  Jessica’s powerful mezzo-soprano voice was a surprise to most of us in the audience, and showed us an accomplished artist as well as lawyer, mother, partner, environmentalist and politician.
