Hot housing fuels labour shortage in Powell River

With few –and increasingly expensive – housing options in qathet, it’s little wonder a labor shortage has intensified in recent months.

Throughout the past couple of years, businesses all around town have reported struggling to find staff. The list of job postings continues to grow. March 2022 had 181 jobs posted via Work BC.

Court ruling doesn’t sink Ottawa’s decision to close Discovery Islands salmon farms, critics say

West Coast environmental groups and First Nations opposed to salmon farming are urging the federal Fisheries Minister Joyce Murray to hold the line after a recent court ruling set aside a decision by her predecessor to phase out salmon farming in the Discovery Islands. 

The Federal Court ruling found then-fisheries minister Bernadette Jordan contravened the right of procedural fairness owed to fish farm companies when deciding to shut down 19 operations in the waters near Campbell River on eastern Vancouver Island by the end of June.

Watching the war from Townsite

After work on the evening of Wednesday, February 23, Rostik Artiushenkov and Anna Honcharova relaxed at their Townsite home, deciding what to watch on Netflix.

Soon, both were stuck to their phones, watching Instagrammed images of rockets flying over Kyiv – where Anna went to university. After weeks of posturing, Russia had invaded Ukraine.
