Low income prevalence dropping on Gabriola

Editor’s note: This appears to be another example of high living costs driving away working age families. Gabriola is becoming an island for seniors and tourists.

More people on Gabriola appear to have higher incomes, according Statistics Canada data.

The prevalence of low-income dropped between the 2020 and 2016 censuses. In 2015, 24.9 per cent of people in the Gabriola Local Trust Area were considered low income while in 2020, that was reduced to 17.8 per cent.

Gabriola Island Electoral Area Directors approve development cost charges

Development cost charge bylaws approved by Regional District of Nanaimo electoral area directors will go to the board of directors for approval Oct. 26 before heading to the province for review.

The bylaws establish development cost charges (DCCs) for community parks in electoral areas A, B, G, and H. Once in force, the charges would apply to new single family and multi-family residential development.

Few details on impact installation of pond leveller at Coats Marsh could have

Nanaimo Climate action committee settles on priorities

Should We Reopen Island Rail?

The Island Railway suspended operations on March 18, 2011, due to safety concerns about the condition of the tracks. Plans to reopen the line continue to this day. In fact, one of the items of correspondence at the  Strathcona Regional District’s May 13th Board Meeting was an email from Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog.
