Vancouver Island prepares to slip and slide after snow dump

Colleen McDougall feels like she hasn’t slept since Christmas.

The Quadra Island resident works with a local company responsible for clearing snow from many of the public parking lots in the community.

Thursday she was shovelling pathways for the local bank after another storm hit the Vancouver Island region overnight, dumping at least a foot of snow.

Gorge Hall opens its doors as warming centre during holiday cold snap

Due to an unusual cold weather event on Cortes Island during the holidays, the Gorge Community Hall in Whaletown opened its doors as a warming centre for two days with the assistance of the Strathcona Regional District’s (SRD) Protective Services.

Campbell River, Cortes, Quadra – Cold snap impacts a house challenged population

The chill that started just before Christmas has been particularly hard on the house challenged population of Campbell River, Quadra island and Cortes island. 

Some people are living in uninsulated cabins, trailers, boats, cars and tents.

Next phase of fiber optics begins on Cortes this week

CKTZ News, through an LJI grant from Canada-info.ca

Installation crews will be working on Cortes Island to lay fiber optic internet cable along roads and to individual homes starting Jan. 7. Households that had applied for the free installation will be contacted two days prior to their turn.

Applications open for free wood chips to Cortes and Quadra organizations

Thanks to Gulf Islands residents’ advocacy for better allocation of a local resource, Cortes and Quadra Islands community organizations can lodge applications for free wood chips until March 4, 2022.
