It has now been four and a half years since the 2019 referendum in which a solid majority of Cortes Islanders voted in favour of bylaw 341. This bylaw established a property tax service that would provide basic operational support for the islands two community halls.

Gorge Hall hosts first New Years event during pandemic, fundraises for hall maintenance

Locals on Cortes are hosting an all ages New Years Eve event with live music and food at the Gorge Hall for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Whaletown Community Club (WCC) for the maintenance of the Gorge Hall. The organization owns and manages the Gorge Hall, the Whaletown Cemetery, the Louisa Tucker Library, the Old Schoolhouse Gallery building, and leases Avery Park from the government. The funds will be managed by the WCC board, the WCC President, and the WCC treasurer Izabelle Perry.

The annual Gorge Hall community Christmas dinner on Cortes Island returns

Cortes Island’s annual community Christmas dinner at the Gorge community hall has been underway for 21 years. But due to pandemic restrictions over the past two years, it had to be take out only. Organizer Izabelle Perry is looking forward to this year welcoming the public back to a sit-down traditional Christmas dinner in a festive atmosphere.

Old Schoolhouse Art Gallery: The 2022 Members Show 

An exquisite scene hangs outside the Old Schoolhouse Art Gallery for the 2022 Annual member’s Show. A hummingbird is depicted flying upward to sample the nectar from a cluster of flowers. Izabelle Perry’s piece is actually a gateway, which some members hope will become a permanent exhibit. The price is $2,500,   

Kristen Schofield Sweet agreed the gate is remarkable, but the membership would have to agree for the gallery to make an investment like that.

Campbell River, Cortes, Quadra – Cold snap impacts a house challenged population

The chill that started just before Christmas has been particularly hard on the house challenged population of Campbell River, Quadra island and Cortes island. 

Some people are living in uninsulated cabins, trailers, boats, cars and tents.
