[Kathleen Code is is a spokesperson for the Rainforest Flying Squad and other land defenders attempting to protect old growth areas at Fairy Creek. She founded the legal team, and is also a member of their media team. Since joining the effort in August, 2020, she’s worked closely with elder Bill Jones to understand the situation of the Pacheedaht First Nation, in particular their interactions with industrial forest company Teal Jones and the NDP government. All about moss: a closer look through an ecologist’s eyes

The Cortes Island Museum & Archives Society is hosting Moss Talk on Dec.12 at Manson’s Hall.
This is a sister event to the Moss Walk, which took place in Kw’as Park on Nov. 13. The presenter for both events is Dan Tucker, an ecologist with a healthy self-admitted obsession with bryophytes, which are a group of plants composed of mosses, hornworts and liverworts. He’s also well-versed in lichens, which are a symbiotic partnership between a fungi and an alga.

Seniors arrested as Fairy Creek blockade digs in for winter

A caravan of seniors wound its way along pitch-black logging roads early Thursday to be in place before first light to block old-growth logging in the Fairy Creek region on southwest Vancouver Island.
A contingent of 30 from across the island and adjacent Gulf Islands arrived at Granite Main Road at 6 a.m. to try to stall the road-building and clear-cutting of the forest giants by Teal-Jones in tree farm licence (TFL) 46 near Port Renfrew.

B.C.’s old growth still falling with delay of provincial logging deferrals

Old-growth forests the B.C. government has identified for logging deferrals are still at risk of being clear cut, according to a West Coast conservation group.
“Intentions don’t stop chainsaws,” said Torrance Coste, campaign director for the Wilderness Committee, of the government’s failure to immediately act on the deferrals announced Nov. 2.

Do clearcuts contribute to BC’s flooding?

Thousands of British Columbians remain displaced following a series of devastating floods and landslides that have swallowed highway roads and entire cities in the southern part of the province.
The floods prompted British Columbia to declare its third state of emergency this year on Nov. 17. The devastation was triggered by an atmospheric river that carried rainfall two times the average amount within a 72-hour period.
