For Curt Cunningham, of the Squirrel Cove General Store, it means not having to leave at 5 AM to ensure he can board the first ferry leaving Cortes Island on Monday mornings. He can stay in bed for another two hours. Cunningham will no longer worry about the consequences of being forced to wait for another sailing on the trip home. (Three loads of ice cream melted in the ferry parking lot last year.) There will be no more nights when he is forced to sleep on Quadra, or Campbell River, because there was no room for his truck on the last ferry. He will not have to ask an employee to open the store in the morning. BC Ferries granted assured loading to Cortes Island’s commercial food trucks.

Tracking BC Timber Sales Progress
The first thing that attracted me was the fine detail. While Global Forest Watch’s online map is full of pertinent detail, it doesn’t look like a satellite map. This is better. Zooming in on Refuge Cove, for example, you can see individual buildings, boats tied up at the wharves, and trees coming right down to the water’s edge. Zooming out to see a larger area, Refuge Cove is set within a block of green. The surrounding area is coloured pinkish- brown, so it can be quickly identified. There are a number of orange blocks east of Refuge Cove. These are the areas that will be logged next. The Wilderness Committee’s new ArcGIS StoryMap is tracking BC Timber Sales extraction of logs from our forests.

Campbell River Is Watchfully Reopening
A week has passed since South Korea announced it was in the midst of a second wave of COVID 19. Though some experts insist this will come to Canada, only one Vancouver Island resident is still infected with the virus. Five people died; the rest recovered. British Columbia is in stage three of a restart program. Public health guidelines still prohibit gatherings of 50 people or more. Campbell River is watchfully reopening.

Fact check: NDP Claims About Conservative Attendance Record Exaggerated, But …
According to our Member of Parliament, Rachel Blaney, the Conservatives had the worst attendance record of any party at the hybrid COVID-19 Committee meetings. One of her staff pointed to the committee minutes, where I added up the number of Liberal, Conservative, NDP and Green MPs for ten of the twenty-one days. Some of the NDP claims about Conservative attendance record are exaggerated, but they point to an obvious truth.

Outdoor Pop-Up Info Booth For Campbell River Waterfront Project
Construction began on June 10, 2019. Close to two kilometres of water and sewer pipe were installed on Highway 19A, between Rockland Road and Rotary Beach Park. The 2020 season came to an abrupt halt on March 16, due to province-wide concerns. The project contractor, Wacor Holdings Ltd, “requested a halt to work on the highway to prevent the spread of the coronavirus and COVID-19 and to review plans for implementation of increased safety measures.” When work on the Campbell River Waterfront Project resumed, on April 13, a number of new safety measures were in place.
