The Federal Government responded within 24 hours of Vancouver’s calling for a referendum on Kinder Morgan’s proposed Trans Mountain expansion project. Not by ensuring BC residents can obtain a proper hearing before the National Energy Board – Vancouver’s complaint – but by announcing stiffer regulations for oil spills. The title for this episode of the Kinder Morgan saga should be “BC’s Pipelines: The Empire Strikes Back!”

51 BC faith Leaders Against Texada Coal Port Expansion

Fifty one of BC’s faith leaders have written Christy Clark an open letter requesting she reconsider her decision to approve the expansion of coal facilities on Texada Island. This follows the discovery, last month, that the provincial government secretly approved a plan to expand for a tenfold to twentyfold increase of the material being exported to China. They wrote that coal is “the fossil fuel most directly linked to the rise of CO2 emissions in China” and “making money at the expense of the health and prosperity of the planet is wrong.”

Some of BC’s Best Farmland will be flooded if Site C Is Approved

This is agricultural land capable of producing as wide a variety of crops as the Fraser Valley. Close to  9,429 acres of class 1-5 farmland  will be flooded. Another 4,451 acres will be used for the dams, roads or is subject to erosion. Some of BC’s best farmland will be flooded if Site C is approved.

Transmission Grid Loss

The world’s transmission lines are believed to have dropped approximately 1.4 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity last year. That’s around 1.2 trillion metric tons of CO2 dumped into the atmosphere. Though it is unlikely these loses can be eliminated in the near future, there are ways to reduce them.

Losses of 5-7% or so are the norm today in the United States, BC and Ontario.
