Methane Emissions: One Of The Gas Industry’s Worst Climate Offenders

There are currently seven liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects in various stages of proposal, planning and construction in B.C. To feed those facilities, B.C. is anticipating an explosion in the amount of fracking in the province’s northeast at the same time as it’s trying to get a handle on one of the gas industry’s worst climate offenders: methane emissions.

BC Is Moving Forward With Site C

When he was the leader of the opposition, John Horgan argued that Treaty 8 Nations “ have entrenched constitutional rights to practice hunting and fishing” on the land that will be underwater if the Site C Dam is built. The BC Utilities Commission recently concluded that “increasingly viable alternative energy sources such as wind, geothermal and industrial curtailment could provide similar benefits to [BC Hydro] ratepayers as the Site C project, with an equal or lower Unit Energy Cost.” Never-the less, today Premier John Horgan announced BC is moving forward with Site C.

Though still nominally premier, Christy Clark knows her government’s days are numbered. If she doesn’t resign, the BC Liberals will be toppled by a non confidence motion when the provincial legislature reassembles in June. Clark intends to continue as Leader of the Opposition. So what does the NDP-Green agreement mean for British Columbians?

The Green party’s support has grown in the month since I met with Sue Moen at Heriot Bay. In Mainstreet Research’s most recent poll, 24% of the people watching the televised debate were leaning towards, or had decided upon, the Green party. Half of the viewers had a “favourable” opinion of Andrew Weaver and had an unfavourable opinion of the two other leaders.
