Mark Lombard looks back over this past year in the Cortes community forest

(The first in a series of articles coming out of the Cortes Forestry General Partnership’s 2022 AGM)

This has been the Cortes Community Forest’s most profitable year, but that is not the Cortes Forestry General Partnership’s only objective. 

“I always start with what areas do we want to keep,” explained General Manager Mark Lombard. 

He used a recent conversation to illustrate how Cortes is taking a different approach than the industry at large.

Quadra Island’s water problem

Quadra Island’s groundwater appears to be disappearing. 

“We need to figure out where it’s going, how much we have that we don’t know about and then how we can make sure that not just the people on Quadra, but also the environment and businesses get what they need,” said Jude McCormick, leader of the Quadra ICAN water security team.  “It is a Herculean task and the first part is to make people aware that we have a problem.”

Notes From The Health & Wellness Breakout Group

The following notes are from the Health & Wellness Breakout Group at the April 7th Cortes Island Virtual Town Hall meeting.

In our breakout group we addressed how to best take care of ourselves during the pandemic crisis. This is a summary of our conversation. Importantly, NONE OF THIS REPLACES APPROPRIATE MEDICAL CARE SHOULD RESPIRATORY SYMPTOMS OCCUR. And of course, no herbs or supplements are known to be effective against COVID-19. Herbal medicines should not be used by anyone taking medications regularly before consulting a licensed health care professional.
