Local tourism had really taken a big hit when Mary Ruth Snyder, Executive Director of the Campbell River Chamber of Commerce and Dianne Hawkins, CEO of the Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce agreed to visit each other’s cities and film the event. The pair did not stop there. They launched a social media campaign encouraging people to explore neighbouring communities and leave a visual record of their visits on social media using hashtags like #ExploreNextDoor, #MeetYourNeighbours, and #ExploreBC.

Opposition to Affordable Housing at 580 Dogwood Street
While this year’s count was cancelled because of the pandemic, the Campbell River and District Coalition to End Homelessness (the Coalition) estimate the city’s unhoused population is currently more than a hundred. Most cite high rents as the principle barrier to their finding permanent accommodation. BC Housing is proposing to fund the build and operations of a 50 unit supported housing building at 580 Dogwood street. This sparked neighbourhood resistance and, at this point, 1,424 people have signed a Change.org petition against the project.

Campbell River’s Bridge To Housing For The Homeless
When the last count was taken, two years ago, there were at least 81 homeless people in Campbell River. After COVID hit, the homeless population was identified as one of the most vulnerable sectors of the community in the province. On July 16, the Campbell River Coalition to End Homelessness hosted a ZOOM meeting to discuss the former Rose Bowl restaurant’s role as a Bridge to housing.

Campbell River Is Watchfully Reopening
A week has passed since South Korea announced it was in the midst of a second wave of COVID 19. Though some experts insist this will come to Canada, only one Vancouver Island resident is still infected with the virus. Five people died; the rest recovered. British Columbia is in stage three of a restart program. Public health guidelines still prohibit gatherings of 50 people or more. Campbell River is watchfully reopening.

Outdoor Pop-Up Info Booth For Campbell River Waterfront Project
Construction began on June 10, 2019. Close to two kilometres of water and sewer pipe were installed on Highway 19A, between Rockland Road and Rotary Beach Park. The 2020 season came to an abrupt halt on March 16, due to province-wide concerns. The project contractor, Wacor Holdings Ltd, “requested a halt to work on the highway to prevent the spread of the coronavirus and COVID-19 and to review plans for implementation of increased safety measures.” When work on the Campbell River Waterfront Project resumed, on April 13, a number of new safety measures were in place.
