One of the key issues in this election is British Columbia’s lack of affordable housing. Earlier this year, the NDP government stated that it built, or is building, 25,000 new affordable homes.

Cortes Island is about to become home to four new units of BC Housing supported housing in the Cortes Seniors Village. The Seniors Village expansions is “already more than 50% complete,” says Sandra Wood, Housing Coordinator for the Cortes Island Senior Society.

Coalition To End Homelessness Asking The SRD To Reconsider Delay To Cortes AffordAble Housing Project
It has been two months since the Strathcona Regional District (SRD) put the public hearing for Cortes Island’s affordable housing project, originally scheduled for last April, on hold until September. When they applied, the Cortes Island Senior’s Society explained that delaying the project would lessen their chances of obtaining a $2 million grant from BC Housing. Now, in one of the letters to submitted for the July 22nd board meeting, the Coalition to End Homelessness is asking the SRD to reconsider.

Regional Directors Put Cortes Affordable Housing Project At Risk

An affordable rental housing project on Cortes Island is in peril after a trio of rural directors voted to postpone public hearings in their regions until September.
Strathcona Regional District’s rural directors Jim Abram, Brenda Leigh and Gerald Whalley voted to defer the rezoning hearing for Rainbow Ridge, a 20-unit subsidized rental home project for families, singles and seniors, at the May 27 board meeting.
