Now that we all know what the virus looks like, it’s time for you to meet your immune system.

This is a macrophage. Macrophages in the lining of your mouth and airways engulf infectious microbes and infected cells, acting as part of your innate defense against infection. Your macrophages have been helping you all along — below are some ideas for helping them (and other parts of the immune system) do their job of protecting you.

On March 27th the first live, call-in Folk U Friday radio show featured naturopathic doctor Maureen Williams with call-in contributions from clinical counsellor Hayley Newell. We also learned how to make our own Alder Bark tincture with Yulia Kochubievsky and got gardening advice thanks to Whitney Vanderleest.

A Remote Island Prepares: Can Cortes Self Isolate?

Regional Director Noba Anderson invited many of Cortes Island’s key businesses and community groups to a Zoom conference call to explore responses to COVID-19. Thirty-nine people connected by phone or computer and a second person appeared on several computer screens. Many embraced the idea that we should act as if the virus is already here. In-so-far as is practical, most attendees appeared to want to see Cortes self isolate.

EASC Turned Down Linnaea’s Application For Funds To Purchase A Heat Pump

In theory, Cortes Island receives a portion of the Provincial Gas Tax. A recent Strathcona Regional District report states, “as of January 1, 2020, the balance of Electoral Area B’s Gas Tax Reserve is approximately $565,325 and (this year) is expected to receive a 2020 transfer of $58,155 in addition to any interest earned on the balance.” According to Regional Director Noba Anderson, the amount keeps growing because Cortes has not been able to access these funds. “The SRD has still not developed any kind of application guide or internal policy around Gas Tax spending, although it has been on the CFO’s work plan I believe for at least five years.” On March 11, 2020, EASC turned down Linnaea’s application for $44,520 in Gas Tax dollars to purchase a heat pump.

Where Are We When Our Youth Need A Helping Hand?

The number of British Columbian participants in the Friday, November 29, 2019, Climate March was down, everywhere. 100,000 marched through the streets of Vancouver two months ago; A thousand took part in the mock funeral that ended with six arrests. A similar number blocked traffic in front of BC Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources in Victoria for half an hour. Only 200 people rallied in Courtenay’s Simms Millennium Park, before marching downtown. There were only dozens in Kelowna. Fifteen people – all but two of them students – took part in a Cortes Island event. This prompted the organizer to ask, “Where are we when our youth need a helping hand to carry the big load?”
