Conceived in 2018, the 20-unit Rainbow Ridge community driven affordable rental housing development on Cortes Island is finding it is slow going to get shovels in the ground. The project was put forward as one initiative to address a severe housing shortage.

Cortes Islanders meeting regularly to promote collective action on climate change

Since last November, a dedicated group of Cortes islanders has been meeting every Friday to protest the slow progress on climate change and other issues, and to find ways to have their concerns heard. They call their gatherings “WTF Fridays.”

Since 1982, Hollyhock Learning Centre has offered residential programs on a range of subjects, from music, dance, writing and theatre, to yoga, meditation, leadership, business and self awareness.

This summer, the organization is celebrating its 40th anniversary in operation on Cortes Island.

Hollyhock Learning and Leadership Centre turns 40: Founding director reflects on legacy

A Cortes Island community hub is celebrating a milestone: Hollyhock Learning and Leadership Centre is turning 40 this year.

Hollyhock Founding Executive Director Rex Weyler says the push to create Hollyhock began in 1981, when he visited the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, where he visited a fortune teller. She told him that when he came upon hollyhock flowers peeking over a high fence, he would be in the right place.

Cortes Island faces housing listing shortage while BC supply at an all-time low

A recent BC Real Estate Association report says 2021 was a record year for sales in the BC housing market, while 2022 begins with the lowest number of listings on record.

On Cortes Island, local resident realtor Martha Abelson, who has 17 years experience, says there are only four active listings, fewer than half the average for this time of year. She believes the pandemic is contributing to the housing supply shortage.
