Advocates question RCMP’s role in recent deaths of Indigenous peoples

Advocates are demanding a public inquiry following the death of a Williams Lake First Nation (WLFN) man who died after RCMP were called to his home — the latest plea for systemic reform to a police force which one chief says has an “inherent bloodlust against people of colour.”

Rojun Alphonse’s family called officers to his apartment early in the morning on July 10 because they were concerned that he was going to harm himself — but instead of calming the man in distress, the RCMP showed up to “terrorize” Alphonse with tear gas, automatic weapons, body armour and armed vehicles, said WLFN Chief Willie Sellars.

Strengthening Indigenous youth wellness through the sport of climbing, one step at a time

Robyn Rice sits down in the rainforest and takes off her moccasins. From out of her bag comes a pair of climbing shoes, and she begins to lace up. It’s a warm morning on Mount Ts’uwxilum (Tzouhalem), a dense forested area in Quw’utsun homelands. A slight breeze is blowing, birds chirp high up in the forest canopy, and squirrels jump from tree to tree. She’s new to climbing outdoors, and she’s doing so with a group that’s helping introduce Indigenous youth on “Vancouver Island” to the sport.

Tla-o-qui-aht calls on regional leaders to address west coast housing crisis

Tofino, BC – Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation is calling upon regional leaders on Vancouver Island’s west coast to come together to tackle the issue of affordable housing in the region.

One consequence of the housing crisis is that Tla-o-qui-aht members have lost the ability to return to live in their homelands, read a release issued by Tla-o-qui-aht’s ha’wiih (hereditary chiefs) and elected council on July 4.

Beyond Beads

Beading helps share knowledge, good laughs, and support for each other through hard times. That’s why beading is important to me, as both an art, and community-centred experience.”

So explains Klahoose and Tla’amin Nation member Emily White, who’s contemporary beading designs are pushing the boundaries of the traditional art form (see left). The 24-year-old Tla’amin Nation intergovernmental policy and fiscal analyst learned to bead in 2018 from the Elders in Residence at the University of Victoria – over many lunchtimes as she was completing her degree in Indigenous Studies and ethics. She especially credits Métis Elder Barb Hulme.
