Coastal communities ‘fed up’ with B.C. shellfish sector’s plastics problem

Coastal communities are tired of paying to clean up plastic and debris from the B.C. shellfish industry to protect the marine environment, stewardship groups say.

The amount of garbage being retrieved from beaches in areas where shellfish aquaculture is concentrated grows year after year, and there’s little apparent enforcement by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) to deal with the issue, said Dorrie Woodward, chair of the Association for Denman Island Marine Stewards (ADIMS).

Majority of shipping containers aboard MV Zim Kingston still missing

It’s been three months since 109 shipping containers were knocked from a cargo ship traveling through rough seas off the west coast of Vancouver Island, yet the location of all but four remain unknown.

Ashley Tapp, co-founder of Epic Exeo, said her initial optimism that the ship’s owner would be held accountable for the missing containers has begun to fade. 

“I’m starting to get pretty discouraged,” she said.

Southern Discovery Islands beach clean-up completed

The southern Discovery Islands beach clean-up is now finished.  

“The last truck load of debris left our yard this morning. So we’re now just into the final stages of cleaning up our own yard as a result of all the little styrofoam balls and things,” said Breanne Quesnel.

Coastal communities ‘raise the alarm’ around marine debris

Tofino, BC – Around two weeks ago, Nicole Gervais said chunks of Styrofoam started washing ashore on the northern end of Long Beach, near the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation community of Esowista on Vancouver Island.

Beach clean-ups, the Misty Isles and life between two worlds

Jonas Fineman has been at sea for much of the last seven months: cleaning up beaches, showing tourists the marine wonders of our area and as the  captain of a scientific research vessel. He returned home briefly last week, before setting out again for the waters off southern Vancouver Island.
