More Killer Whales and Humpback Whales in Our Waters

There have been a lot more killer whales and Humpback whales in our waters lately. According to a new study from UBC, the inside waters off Vancouver Island are critical habitat for West Coast Transient, or Bigg’s killer whales. The return of Humpback whales has been heralded as a success story, and there are now also reports of gray whale sightings. Last week, Cortes Currents interviewed two of the scientists involved in this research.

Lack of regulations leaves humpback at risk despite BC Ferries slowdown, experts say

Researchers welcome a slowdown by BC Ferries through one of the region’s key humpback whale corridors, but warn it’s not enough without binding federal rules for foreign cruise lines and surging LNG tankers.

The company will reduce speeds starting June 1, after one of its ships struck and killed a humpback whale named Midnight in Wright Sound last year.

Highlights from Green candidate Nic Dedeluk’s visit to Cortes Island

Around 30 people turned out to meet Green candidate Nic Dedeluk when she came to Mansons Hall on Monday, October 7. Cortes Currents recorded 145 minutes of the two hour meeting, which is far too much to fit into a half hour broadcast. So today’s program consists of a few highlights.

Nic for North Island, an Interview with The Green Party Candidate

While the Green party has shown promise in the past, especially on Vancouver Island, this has yet to translate into votes on election day. So my biggest question for Nic Dedeluk, the candidate for North Island riding, is why should we vote Green? 

Nick Dedeluk: “The Green Party is running candidates in 69 ridings, but we have six ridings that we are really hopeful will actually get elected. Getting six green MLAs voted in would be really positive for BC politics and holding the other parties accountable to moving forward  in a way that’s better for our environment.”

Cetus Research needs funds for a whale response and monitoring program

A Quadra-based whale conservationist is fundraising to be “response ready” for when humpback whales and other marine mammals need help. Tristan Ray-Wilks, a Quadra Island resident and a director with Cetus Research and Conservation Society (CRCS) is raising funds on GoFundMe to launch a response and monitoring program that will provide assistance to distressed cetaceans spotted along the coastline of Vancouver Island.
