Cortes Island Academy urgently seeking fall housing for students

The Cortes Island Academy is launching its inaugural semester of programs for high school students this September.

The Cortes Island School only accommodates students up until Grade 9. The Cortes Island Academy, or “CIA” as it’s known, is the creation of a number of Cortes parents, who wanted to ensure students did not have to leave the island for Grades 10, 11 and 12. The program is part of local School District 72.

Cortes Island docks, local harbor authority recommend some easy steps to ensure security

Summer is the busiest time of year for recreational boaters, and docks on Cortes Island are popular.

Harbour Authority of Cortes Island Manager Jenny Hartwick anticipates one of the busiest seasons on record. She advises vessel owners to secure valuable items on board in a locked area and encourages them to call the RCMP if anything goes missing and to advise the Harbour Authority as well.

Mark Vonesch running as candidate for Cortes Island director in upcoming municipal election

Mark Vonesch has spent the last 17 years engaged in various organizations, both professionally and as a volunteer on Cortes Island and now, he wants to represent the community as a director on the board of the Strathcona Regional District. He’s thrown his hat into the ring to run in the next municipal election set for Oct. 15.

Original production Snakeskin Lightning being featured at annual Cortes Day evening celebration

Snakeskin Lightning is coming to Mansons Landing Community Hall on the evening of July 23 as part of the annual Cortes Island Day celebrations.

It’s the creation of Caresse Nadeau of Cumberland, BC on Vancouver Island. The multimedia production is theatrical and combines live music, dance and animation.
