Cortes Kayaks: Family business enters busy summer season

Kai Harvey grew up on rural Cortes Island and comes from an entrepreneurial family. She’s committed to the island and wanted to find a way to stay, rather than needing to leave the island to find work, as many young adults do. She’s spent lots of time exploring local waters and worked as a kayaking guide with local company Misty Isles Adventures.

Mary Lavelle took the general manager’s reigns at the Cortes Island Natural Food Co-op at the beginning of this year. She says she had big boots to fill after former general manager Eric Hargrave moved on after a nine year tenure.

Cortes Island Natural Food Co-op raises wages in a bid to retain and attract staff

As of June 1, British Columbia’s minimum wage is the highest in Canada at $15.65 per hour. Yet businesses in urban and rural communities are struggling to meet staffing needs; some of the hardest hit are the service, hospitality and retail sectors.

Needed vehicle hauling and tire repair service launched on Cortes Island

Up until a few weeks ago, for Cortes Islanders needing to remove dead vehicles, or get ones in need of repair to a mechanic, it meant a trip to neighboring Quadra Island, or to Campbell River on Vancouver Island, or, hiring someone providing those services to come to Cortes. The same went for getting a tire repaired, but not anymore.

Upcoming TV series features the sustainable seafood industry off BC’s south coast

A series is featuring the south coast of BC’s sustainable seafood industry.

The series is called Your Nation’s Table and launches Nov. 14 on JoyTV, a division of Zoomer Media. Program host Carmen Ruiz y Laza is based in Vancouver. She was inspired to do a TV series on sustainable seafood after reading novels by Cortes Island part-time resident Ruth Ozeki.
