Cortes Island family donates a portion of its profits towards marine conservation

Inspired by the enthusiasm her teenage sons shared after being on hand for a high school presentation nearly 10 years ago, Cortes Creations owner Leslie Mack-Mumford got creative. The family business was looking for a way to generate enough money to donate towards marine conservation initiatives.

And so 10,000 Whales was born, a wing of Cortes Creations, the local health and natural skin care products enterprise.

General manager of Qathen Xwegus on Cortes Island is stepping down after three years

Bruno Pereira has been at the helm of Klahoose First Nation’s business arm since 2019 and, after over three years in the role, he’s stepping down.

Pereira has helped the Qathen Xwegus corporation grow and develop significantly during his tenure. The corporation has several divisions, including tourism, forestry and aquaculture. Pereira says when he took over, revenues were marginal at best. Now, he says Qathen Xwegus has evolved to bring in $8-10 million dollars annually in gross revenue.

Province-wide doctors shortage in BC reaches Cortes Island

A shortage of family doctors in British Columbia is not only affecting cities, but has spread to rural areas. Nearly a million people are without a family doctor in the province, according to a BC Family Doctors press release April 20.

The Cortes Island Community Health Association operates a clinic—open on weekdays—providing the island’s 1,000 year round residents and visitors with primary health care. So far, there has only been one week this spring when a physician wasn’t on duty.

Red tractor reborn: Cortes Island’s oldest operational vehicle proudly showcased for public viewing

A nearly 70-year old tractor is now being proudly displayed in a spot visible to the public on Cortes Island. Co-owners Joy Shipway and George Sirk say the utility vehicle has a rich history and has performed numerous and varying jobs for its many owners over the decades.
