Cortes Island Boating under new ownership/management as busy season approaches

In 2021, the Klahoose First Nation on Cortes Island purchased the popular Gorge Harbor Marina Resort. It attracts boaters from the Pacific Northwest providing docking facilities, a general store, an RV/campground, a hot tub and a restaurant. Along with tourists, locals flock to the site for yoga classes, massages and free music most evenings during summer months.

BC ferries further delays needed capacity on Campbell River to Quadra Island route

Lengthy waits for travelers on BC Ferries’ Campbell River to Quadra Island route have been chronic for several years any time of year. Relief was to come this summer with the implementation of two vessels serving the route instead of one, increasing capacity by 80 per cent.

Blue Jay Lake Farm welcomes newcomers to rural life and helps address local housing shortage

Blue Jay Lake Farm has been welcoming newcomers to Cortes Island for more than 30 years. The farm seeks workers through the international Worldwide Opportunities On Organic Farms (WWOOF) program, previously known as “Willing Workers On Organic Farms.” Up to 25 “Woofers” per year spend time on the farm.

Cortes Island farm finds new ways to get goods to market

For more than 40 years, Cortes Islanders have been relying on Linnaea Farm for organic, seasonal produce, along with beef, lamb and chickens. The 316 acre charitable land trust is overseen by the Linnaea Farm Society and includes a group of stewards who live on the property.

Local business owner has mixed feelings as provincial minimum wage increases

On June 1, BC’s minimum wage will increase by 45 cents to $15.65 per hour, making it the highest in Canada, according to the Retail Council of Canada.
