Kim Paulley (part 2): George Sirk, Cortes Island and the rebirth of her career

Her singing career appeared to be a thing of the past, when Kim Paulley came to Cortes Island in 1992. The release of ‘Straight From The Heart’ had been promising, but she turned to Classical music. While there had been ‘fantastic’ moments between 1985-90, there was also the toil of auditions (and sometimes not getting the part). Her career was on hold when a friend  recommended the retreats at Hollyhock, where George Sirk was a naturalist guide.

Artist spotlight: Local Jemma Hicken returns to the stage for Lovefest

Jemma Hicken is a born and raised Cortes musician who is returning to the scene this year to play at the returning, annual summer music festival Lovefest.

Hicken has recently finished a degree in music and has moved back to the island to get in touch with her roots.

Tickets for Lovefest 2022

Tickets for Lovefest 2022 go on sale this week. Rex Weyler is distributing them to stores throughout Cortes Island and will be selling tickets at Mansons Friday Market. 

“The whole purpose of Lovefest, right from the beginning, is just a fun community day of people being together. Great music and giving a venue for the artists to sell their wares and have a good day in the sun,”  he said.

Cortes Island summer music festival cautiously revives as pandemic restrictions ease

Editor’s Note: Greg Osoba has played with bands Six Foot Johnson and with the Mark Brotten and Rex Weyler ensembles in past Lovefest events.

An annual summer music festival, in various forms, on rural Cortes Island has been an institution for decades. It’s been organized by various people and set in numerous locations over the years. The events range from full weekend to single day celebrations.
