Quadra and Cortes Islands without power overnight

With ferries cancelled, BC Hydro says that customers on Quadra and Cortes Island will be left without power overnight (Jan. 5). 

According to BC Hydro, 8,963 customers on North Vancouver Island were without power as of 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, with the majority of outages concentrated in Tofino, Campbell River and Courtenay

An Artistic Sacred Journey: The Pacific Northwest’s canoe culture

A massive canvas canoe adorned with sweeping bold lines of red, black and royal blue swallows up the space around it.

Artist KC Hall has little room to step back and get perspective on his latest work housed in a temporary workshop on Quadra Island a week before Christmas.

Hall, renowned for his synthesis of graffiti, manga and Northwest Coast art, is finishing up a central piece for the Sacred Journey travelling exhibition, slated to launch in Campbell River on Vancouver Island this spring.

Closing down the Discovery Islands Salmon Farms

The licenses for 19 salmon farms in the Discovery lslands expired today.  Bernadette Jordan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is reissuing licenses for 18 months, during which time “no new fish of any size may be introduced into Discovery Islands.” “Fish at the sites can complete their growth-cycle and be harvested,” but “all farms be free of fish by June 30th, 2022.”

The Minister added, “The federal government will continue working collaboratively with partners on the responsible transition from open-net pen salmon farming in coastal British Columbia waters by 2025.”

Campbell River-Quadra Island’s second hybrid electric Ferry launched

The fourth of BC Ferries Island Class ferry was launched early Thursday morning, at Damen Shipyards Galati, in Romania. The yet-to-be named ship is the second hybrid electric destined for the Campbell RiverQuadra Island route.
