Campbell River’s 2019 Disaster Preparedness Trade show

This mornings program is the beginning of a series about the 2019 Disaster Preparedness Trade Show, held in Campbell River’s Thunderbird Hall on Friday , Oct 18, 2019. The room is filled with a smorgasbord of stories, ranging from oil spill clean-ups, to a First Nations helicopter rescue initiative and much more. You can find them in in the halls 21 booths and four free public education sessions. One of the organizers told me this is Shaun Koopman’s day. Shaun is the Strahcona Regional District’s Protective Services Coordinator and he is behind this public introduction to the emergency response community.

CorilAir serves Campbell River and the Discovery Islands

Cortes Island Air was based in Gorge Harbour in the 1990s. That was before Richard Godfrey sold the company to Mike Farrel in 2000. Farrel relocated to Campbell River, but preserved the company’s origins in its new name. CorilAir is short for Cortes Island Airlines. 

While the airline now flies out of Campbell River, it still serves Cortes and the other Discovery Islands.

Cortes Is Different

During all the fire and fury over Cortes’ proposed “Hall Tax,” it occurred to me that the problem of increasing difficulty in operating and maintaining our Community Halls can hardly be unique to Cortes. Surely other communities are facing similar challenges; it would be worth finding out how (or whether) they were solving the problem. So I set out to investigate the funding basis of as many coastal community halls as possible, in communities not too different from our own: smallish, rural-ish, remote-ish.

Campbell River Climate March

More than four million people participated in the Global Climate strike on Friday, September 20, 2019. There were over 2,500 separate events, on all seven continents. At least two of these were in our area. Five hundred signatures were collected at the Campbell River Climate March and close to fifty people gathered to show their support on Cortes Island.

2019 Barefoot Raid Around Cortes Island

The SMURFETTE reached Squirrel Cove about 1 PM on Wednesday, August 21. According to a  crew member, it is one of the catamarans battling it out for the lead. The last of the small boats arrived over the course of the next three hours. They are mid-way in the 2019 Barefoot Raid around Cortes Island.
