2025 MicroGrants 4 Neighbours Program on Cortes Island

Immanuel McKenty is the new face of the Cortes Island Microgrants 4 Neighbours Program.

When this ZOOM interview began, he was sitting in a room that looked very similar to where  I interviewed him along with the rest of the Awakeneers on previous occasions.

Cortes Currents: Give me your spiel and then I’ll ask some questions.

Immanuel McKenty: “  The 2025 round of the Cortes Island MicroGrants is now open for applications between March 10th and April 7th. We’re accepting applications for cool projects in on in theCortes community and giving out grants between $50 and $500. The application process is super simple. The link is on the Cortes Foundation website under their Grants section. And there’s also posts on Tideline and the various different Cortes Island Facebook pages. One interesting new thing we’re trying this year for the first time is we’re planning to put all of the applications out for input to the whole community once we receive them. So anyone who lives on Cortes can log in and view all the applications and submit their votes on which are their favourites.”

“I’m looking forward to seeing all the creative projects that get submitted and there’s a few that are coming in already.”

Potential Land Use Issue at Evans Bay, Read Island

The text of Lannie Keller’s Tuesday, March 11 presentation made to the Electoral Areas Services Committee

I’m here to present local concerns and request SRD’s help to avert a land use conflict and a Bylaw zoning violation at Read Island.

To begin, I’m grateful to live in unceded traditional territory of the Homalco and Klahoose First Nations. And for the wild beauty of this place.

We moved to Read Island in 1980, and have made our living creating and running (what is now) Canada’s longest operating kayak touring company from our home in Evans Bay. Coast Mountain Expeditions has become Read Island’s largest employer. We offer activities based on wilderness ambience – all in this local area. Our business is threatened by Island Sea Farm’s Aquaculture License #1401594, conditionally approved by the province in June 2023.

This Week: 2025 Rural Islands Economic Partnership Virtual Forum

The 2025 Rural Islands Economic Partnership (RIEP) Virtual Forum is coming up on Thursday, March 6 and Friday, March 7. Two of the organizers, Francine Carlin and Kate Maddigan are my guests today.

“ It’s going to be a jam packed two half days, 9:15 AM to 12:30 PM.  Our virtual events are really unique because we all live on islands or remote coastal communities and don’t have the opportunity to get together as a collaborative regional grouping. So it’s important to have these virtual events that bring together people from all across the coast and the islands, up from North Island as far as Alert Bay, to Sooke and beyond. So we have a pretty broad reach and this year it’s really important, particularly with the events in the world around economic  issues that relate to  our local  economic and social wellbeing,” explained Francine Carlin, Chair of the Rural Islands Economic Partnership

Flag Day Comes To Cortes Island

By Chris Dragseth

I thought you might be interested in an article about Flag Day and my personal values related to the flag.  You’ll recall that Shiela Copps announced in February 2006 “one million flags to Canadians”.  The program was controversial, given the costs

Not withstanding the controversy, it pushed me into looking a little deeper.  To my amazement, any Canadian could request and receive any of the Canadian flags that fly on Canada’s Parliament buildings.  They come in two sizes.  The Peace Tower is the biggest, 7.5 x 15 feet, and is changed daily.  While the East and West Block flags are 4.5 x 9 feet and are changed weekly.  So……. I thought I’d request a the Peace Tower.  After all it truly symbolizes Canada’s Parliament.
