The Regional Capital District (CRD), in partnership with the Community Social Planning Council and the Greater Victoria Coalition to End Homelessness, released the results of the 2020 Greater Victoria Spot Count on Friday. It follows previous biennial counts conducted in 2016 and 2018 and is funded by the Government of Canada. As of March 11, 2020, 1,523 people were homeless in the Capital Region, compared to 1,525 on March 15, 2018.

After COVID hit, the homeless population was identified as one of the most vulnerable sectors of the community in the province. On July 16, the Campbell River Coalition to End Homelessness hosted a ZOOM meeting to discuss the former Rose Bowl restaurant’s role as a Bridge to housing.

An affordable rental housing project on Cortes Island is in peril after a trio of rural directors voted to postpone public hearings in their regions until September.
Strathcona Regional District’s rural directors Jim Abram, Brenda Leigh and Gerald Whalley voted to defer the rezoning hearing for Rainbow Ridge, a 20-unit subsidized rental home project for families, singles and seniors, at the May 27 board meeting.
