Falling Boundaries: A photographic art series by David Ellingsen

David Ellingsen will be giving the residents of Cortes Island two presentations of his latest fine art photography series this year. 

“I’m going to be speaking at the Cortes Island Museum and Archives AGM on the 27th. It’s a fairly short talk, probably about 45 minutes, and then some time for Q and A. So it’s not  a huge amount of time. I’m going to be speaking a little bit about the ‘Falling Boundaries’ series. I also am planning on exhibiting this series, the actual prints, in the summer time,” he explained.

The exhibit will be at the Old Schoolhouse Gallery on the weekends of July 29 – 31 and August 5th-7th, 2022.

Perceived Biodiversity loss in Mansons Lagoon

Around 30 people trekked around the Spit into Mansons Lagoon, during the July 12 ‘Gumbooting the Lagoon.’ While Jane Newman, from the Cortes Island Museum, explained the site’s human history, marine biologist Deb Cowper and FOCI’s Autumn Barrett-Morgan introduced everyone to intertidal life forms. One of the many topics that arose was the loss of marine life.

Cortes Museum’s upcoming AGM to be a special event

Cortes Island Museum and Archives Society is planning for their first in-person annual general meeting in two years, which will feature a presentation by fine art photographer David Ellingsen.

The AGM will be held at Manson’s Hall on Sunday, March 27th, with doors opening at 12:30 pm. There is no cost to attend but donations are gratefully appreciated for the event and towards memberships.

Christmas Bird Count results a hoot with naturalist George Sirk

The results are finally in from the annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC) held on Cortes Island on Jan. 5.

Despite the unseasonably cold weather, 29 people noted observations in the field or at their home bird feeder, collectively recording 2,963 individuals of 70 various species. Island resident George Sirk, whose naturalist-guide work has taken him Papua New Guinea to Greenland, said these numbers are right on the mark with the 21-year average.
