Elbows up plus — retaliation is just part of the story, Alberta legislature hears

Elbows up has earned its place as a catchphrase of the moment for a Trump-and-tariffs Canada where patriotism suddenly got cool again. But perhaps also worth considering is the not-so-sexy cliché nose to the grindstone, as provinces like Alberta reorient their economies to become less reliant on the U.S.

Both ideas rose from the floor of Alberta’s legislature this week, as Donald Trump’s pronouncements, commentary and policies continued to sow economic havoc and news cycle confusion and unpredictability.

Federal Conservative candidate Aaron Gunn held a True North Strong and Free election rally in Campbell River Thursday night that drew about 200 attendees.

Pierre Poilievre promises patriotism but stays vague about U.S. tariff threat

On the eve of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s meeting with premiers to tackle the threat of looming U.S. tariffs, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre was on the West Coast hosting a packed “axe the tax” rally. 

Poilievre’s speech Tuesday night to the large crowd at Dwight Hall in Powell River was heavy with patriotism but didn’t address how he’d tackle incoming U.S. president Donald Trump’s promise to impose a 25-per-cent tariff on Canadian goods.

BC Greens call out Alberta fossil fuel war room’s attack on Nanaimo

B.C.’s Green Party Leader is dismayed Alberta’s fossil fuel “war room” is targeting Nanaimo, B.C., for its leadership in phasing out natural gas hookups to reduce the community’s emissions.

After a summer of record-breaking wildfires and sustained heat and drought, every level of government needs to be seeking solutions to the climate crisis, not sabotaging those that do, said Sonia Furstenau, the Greens’ leader and MLA for Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island.

Alberta’s fossil fuels ‘war room’ singles out a local B.C. government for battle

When Nanaimo recently voted to ban FortisBC’s natural gas hookups from new buildings, Alberta’s infamous pro-oil and gas “war room” launched a cross-border political campaign to reverse the move. 

The Canadian Energy Centre (CEC) is a publically funded provincial corporation created by former Alberta premier Jason Kenney to protect and promote the fossil fuel industry.
