A New Approach to Homelessness: Housing First

As Currents recently reported, homelessness is not just “an American thing,” or “a big-city thing,” or even “a Vancouver Island thing.”  Homelessness is also here on Cortes, where a recent survey found that about 50 people rated their housing situation as “unstable,” and 11 were living rough (with no permanent shelter, in tents or other makeshift accommodation).

Although “housing” might sound like a single issue, it has has knock-on effects throughout our community.

Success of COP26 hinges on whether climate financing scales up

Climate Minister Jonathan Wilkinson doesn’t know if he’ll continue to serve in the role just yet, but with COP26 in arm’s reach, his portfolio may be the most significant of any cabinet member.

Speaking with reporters Friday from a pre-COP meeting in Milan, Wilkinson said Canada’s focus in the lead-up to COP26 is closing the gap on the US$100 billion worth of climate financing per year rich countries promised developing ones over a decade ago at COP15.

Canada’s climate plans ‘highly insufficient’ in global ranking

The independent Climate Action Tracker (CAT) has crunched the numbers on countries’ updated 2030 Paris Agreement targets and found Canada’s “highly insufficient,” pouring cold water on Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau’s campaign emphasis on expert endorsements.

Norway’s EV Tipping-Point Is Here

Prior to the introduction of supportive government policies, most battery electric vehicles (BEV) were in Oslo, Norway. In March 2014, one percent of the vehicles on the roads were electric. Five years later, in March 2019, 58.4% of new vehicle purchases were electric (BEV & hybrid). Zach Shahan of Clean Technica writes that last month, 38% of the sales were fully electric and another 25% hybrids. Norway’s EV Tipping-Point is here.

Renewables Supplied 32.9% of the EU’s Electricity

Screen-shot-2014-03-18-at-3.43.47-PM1Aside from the cold winter of 2012, Europe’s electric consumption has been declining the past five years. A combination of milder winters, advances in  energy efficiency and some industry  relocations have brought the numbers down. It is against this background that the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) point to the marked growth of  wind and solar energy. According to their report Electricity in Europe 2014, renewables supplied 32.9% of the EU’s electricity.
