Robyn Mawhinney elected new Director for Area C in Strathcona Regional District

In the end, it wasn’t a close race in Area C of the Strathcona Regional District (SRD). BC voters went to the polls on Oct. 15 to elect municipal governments and Robyn Mawhinney garnered 69 per cent of the votes over Marc Doll in Area C of the SRD.

Mawhinney says her positive focus and open communication style helped secure her victory. Almost half of eligible voters cast ballots in Area C (49 percent), according to Mawhinney, and added that on average, most BC municipalities struggle to see more than a 30 per cent turnout.

Fire chief gives tips on wood stove safety as winter approaches

With fall in full swing, coastal BC residents are experiencing cooler temperatures, and many rural citizens rely on wood as a primary heating source in the colder seasons.

Cortes Island Fire Chief Dave Ives says it’s time to ensure chimneys and wood stoves are in good working order and recommends having them inspected and cleaned by a professional. A majority of emergency calls directed to the Cortes Fire Department are house fires, according to the chief.

Students, instructors enthusiastic about early stages of Cortes Island Academy pilot program

Students and instructors are happy with the first semester of a pilot program for senior high school students on Cortes Island. The Cortes Island Academy is the brainchild of parents on the island, where teenagers in grades 10, 11 and 12 had to either be homeschooled or leave to complete their high school education prior to this school year.

The Academy launched this past September. The school year is based on a semester system consisting of four blocks, each lasting four to five weeks: Outdoor Adventure & Leadership; Marine Ecology; Creative Tools For Truth Telling; and Film Making.

Cortes Island high school pilot program sees successful start

‘Your Nation’s Table’ TV series on BC’s sustainable seafood industry nears completion

Your Nation’s Table TV series on BC’s sustainable seafood industry premiers this fall on Nov. 15.

Producer/host Carmen Ruiz y Laza says shooting has finished on five of the six episodes. She adds that the series highlights  families involved in sustainable fisheries harvesting salmon, albacore tuna, spot prawns, geoduck, sable fish (also known as black cod), and dungeness crab. Salmon, spot prawns and geoduck are all harvested in the waters off Cortes Island.
