Better pay for paramedics in rural communities

BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) is trying to ensure that there are sufficient paramedics in rural communities throughout the province. 

In a leaked memo from Chief Ambulance Officer Leanne Heppell and Troy Clifford, Provincial President of the Ambulance Paramedics of BC, dated August 6th, BCEHS notified its employees and Local 873 members of two changes of great importance to Cortes Island, Sayward, Tahsis and Zeballos.

First of two Hybrid/e-ferries for Campbell River run arrives in BC, second on its way

Two hybrid diesel/electric ferries with increased vehicle capacity will begin providing two-ship service on the Campbell River – Quadra Island route starting in early 2022.

Shelley Downey running for Conservatives again

Long term Port McNeill City Coun. Shelley Downey will once again be the Conservative candidate in North Island-Powell River during the next federal election.

In response to Cortes Currents query about running again, Downey replied, “I will be representing the Conservative Party of Canada when the next election is called.”

Why do fish farms donate $millions to local communities?

Cermaq Canada has donated more than $2 million to local communities since 2018. Campbell River’s two other fish farm companies, MOWI Canada West and Grieg Seafood, also made substantial donations. 

Linda Sams, Sustainable Development Director at Cermaq Canada explained, “It is part of our culture and we have a shared value approach. Meaning that we are part of communities and we believe we need to add value to the communities we operate in.”
